Who has never heard of Asiago? Just a very small number of people. Some people think of Asiago as a location for their summer holidays. Asiago is situated near the Pianura Padana and it becomes a "refuge" during the hot and humid days in many big cities near Asiago: Vicenza, Padua, Venice, Milan and Rome.
Old people remember Asiago for the World Wars which were fought in this territory. Others consider Asiago as a big centre for gliders with the chance of over flying the wonderful Dolomites. Others think of the winter sports when they hear the name Asiago. We must not forget the importance of the "Asiago Cheese", known all over the world; or the "Asiago Red" a special marble which comes from the quarries in this zone. It’s used to build many structures in Italy and in other countries of the world: for example Kuwait.
There aren't many things that can help you to figure out this town before the First World War. Asiago was completely rebuilt after that terrible disaster. Near the Europa Hotel there's the statue of Blessed Mary Johanna Bonomo, that miraculously lost only a finger during the whole conflict (did she have an angel next to her?). Fortunately the war didn't destroy the wonderful nature of the Altopiano. We hope that modern constructions won't do what the war didn't in the past.
